What does your blood carry all around you?

Have you ever seen a little red drop after a tiny scratch? That red is your blood. It is inside you all the time.

Your blood is always on the move. It travels from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. It keeps going even while you sleep. So what does your blood carry all around you?

Every part of you needs a few things to keep working. Your fingers need them, and so do your knees and eyes. But they cannot go and fetch these things for themselves. So your blood brings everything right to them.

The first thing is air. When you breathe in, air fills your lungs, which are two soft bags inside your chest. They puff up a little with each breath.

Your blood flows right past your lungs. There it takes in the part of the air your body needs. Now your blood is ready for its trip.

Your heart pushes the blood along, beat after beat. It sends the blood through thin tubes into your arms, legs and head. That way, the fresh air reaches every part of you.

Your fingers and toes use that air to wiggle and grow. Air is not the only thing they need, though. What else do you think you give your body at breakfast?

It is food! Your tummy squishes your food into very small bits. The bits are so small that blood can carry them.

Your blood picks up the food bits and carries them everywhere. Food gives your arms and legs the strength to run, jump and grow.

Our special word today was lungs. Your blood carries air from your lungs and food to every part of you.

Rest well, little one, while your busy blood keeps carrying air and food all around you.
