Why do we need sleep?
Think about the end of a busy day. Your legs feel heavy. Your eyes want to close. Out comes a big, slow yawn.
Every night, you climb into bed and fall asleep. You sleep all through the dark night, until the sun comes up. But why do we need sleep? Let's find out together.
All day long, your body and your brain are busy. You run, jump, talk and think. All that busy work uses up your energy. So by bedtime, you feel tired.
When you fall asleep, your body goes still and soft. Your heart beats slower. Your breathing gets slow and deep. This quiet time lets your body stop working so hard.
Now your body can recharge, which means filling back up with energy. It is like a tablet plugged in at night. While you sleep, its battery fills up, bit by bit. Hour by hour, your body fills up again.
Your brain needs to recharge too. It worked hard all day, noticing and learning new things. Sleep gives your brain a long rest. So what do you think happens when morning comes?
When morning comes, you wake up full of energy again. Your eyes open wide and bright in the sunny light. Your legs feel bouncy. Your mind feels clear and ready to play and learn.
When you miss sleep, your body and brain cannot recharge all the way. The next day, you feel grumpy and slow. Even easy games and puzzles feel hard to do. That is why you need a whole night of sleep.
Our special word is recharge. A busy day uses up your energy, and sleep lets your body and brain recharge.
Now snuggle in, close your eyes, and let your body recharge all night long. Sweet dreams.
