Why Does Water Take the Shape of Its Cup?

A little water rests in a clear plastic cup on the table. A grownup pours it into a wide bowl, and now it spreads across the bottom. The same water has a different shape.

Water is a liquid, something that can flow. When the grownup tips the cup, the water runs out in a little stream. A liquid can move and change shape as it flows into a new place.

A container is something that holds things, like a cup or bowl. The cup has a bottom underneath the water and sides around it. Those parts hold the water, so it stays inside the cup.

In the wide bowl, the water flows across the bottom and meets the curved sides. It does not stand up in its old cup shape. When the water settles, its top rests flat, below the rim.

Beside the bowl sits an empty, narrow plastic cup. The grownup is about to pour the water from the bowl into that cup. Will the water keep its wide bowl shape or fit inside the narrow cup?

The water flows into the narrow cup and fits inside it. This container holds the water with its bottom and sides. The water fills only the lower part, leaving empty space above its flat top.

A wooden block and a wooden ball are hard and hold their shapes. When the grownup moves them from a cup to a bowl, the block stays block shaped. The ball stays round, without spreading out.

The water changes shape, but it remains water. The grownup pours it all carefully, without spilling or adding any. A different shape does not make extra water appear.

Liquid can flow, and a container holds it. Water takes the shape of its cup because it flows against the bottom and sides, fitting the part it fills.

May your day hold a little wonder, even in an ordinary cup of water.
