Why is a very tall sandwich harder to bite?

Think of a soft sandwich in your hands. You can feel the squishy bread under your fingers. Maybe you can smell warm cheese inside. Your hands hold it gently, ready for a big bite.

Now picture a sandwich stacked up high. The layers go up and up and up. Bread, cheese, tomato, more bread, and more cheese, taller than your cup of milk. Why is a very tall sandwich harder to bite?

A bite needs your teeth on both sides of the food. Your top teeth press down from above. Your bottom teeth push up from underneath. When they meet in the middle, they cut off a piece.

To get the food between your teeth, you open your mouth wide. Your jaw, the bony part that moves your mouth open and shut, does that job. Your jaw drops down, and your teeth move apart to make room.

Your jaw swings open like a little door. A door stops when it is open all the way. Your jaw stops too, so your mouth only opens so wide. What do you think happens when a sandwich is taller than that?

The sandwich is just too tall to fit in your open mouth. Your top teeth bump the top bread. Your bottom teeth cannot reach under the bottom bread. So your teeth cannot close around it to cut a piece.

Jaw. Your jaw opens only so far, so a tall sandwich won't fit between your teeth.

Sleep well, little one, and may your next sandwich be just the right size for a happy bite.
