How do you keep berries from squishing in a picnic bag?

Have you ever held a ripe raspberry in your hand? It feels soft and cool. It smells sweet, like summer.

Now picture a sunny picnic day. You want to bring berries in your bag, round and ready to eat. So how do you keep berries from squishing in a picnic bag?

Berries have thin skins and juicy insides. When something heavy presses down on a berry, its skin splits open. The juice runs out, and that is the squish.

So first, you need a container, which means a hard box with a lid. Its hard sides do not bend like the soft bag. That way, the other things in the bag cannot poke into the berries.

Next, you set the berries in the container in one layer, which means one flat row of berries side by side. No berry sits on top of another. Then no berry gets pressed by berries above it.

Now you and a grown-up pack the bag. The heavy things go in first, like the water bottle and the apples. At the bottom, they press on nothing soft. So where do you think the berry container goes?

It goes on top! You put the container in last, above everything else. Nothing heavy sits on its lid to push it down, so every berry in the layer stays round.

Last, you carry the bag standing up, holding it by its handles. That keeps the container on top the whole way. Your berries ride along in their layer, safe and whole.

You keep berries round in a hard container, in one layer, at the top of the bag. Then nothing heavy can press on them.

At the picnic, you lift the lid of the container. There sit your berries in their flat layer, round and shiny, ready to eat.
