Can you make a sandwich without sliced bread?

Think of the soft bread you take from a bag. Each piece is already thin and flat. Squish one, and it bends in your hand. Those pieces are sliced bread.

But what if the bag is empty? Only a big round bread sits on the table. Can you still make a sandwich without sliced bread?

Every sandwich has a tasty middle. We call that middle the filling, which means the food you tuck inside. Cheese, cucumber and jam can all be filling.

The filling needs bread around it. Bread hugs the filling on the outside, so the food stays together. Then your hands can hold the whole sandwich.

Look at that big round bread on the table. It is a loaf, which means bread baked in one big piece. This loaf is the same soft bread, just not cut into pieces yet.

A grown-up holds the loaf steady and cuts two slices with a bread knife. Now you have a top and a bottom. Lay your filling between them, and there is your sandwich!

A bread roll works too, smaller than a loaf. A grown-up cuts it open, and you tuck the filling inside. Now picture a bread as flat and thin as a soft blanket. How could that bread hold your filling?

You can roll it up! Lay the filling on the flat bread and fold it around, snug and tight. We call that a wrap, which means a flat bread rolled around a filling. Your wrap is ready to munch.

Yes, you can! Two slices from a loaf, or a wrap, still hug your filling tight.

On the table, the big round loaf now has two slices gone. Beside it lies a snug wrap, with cheese and cucumber tucked inside.
