Why did people invent money?

Have you ever held a coin in your hand and felt how cool and smooth it is? Maybe you have heard coins jingle in a pocket. At the shop, your grown-up hands over money, and the shopkeeper hands over the bread.

But long, long ago, nobody had coins or paper money at all. People still needed food, clothes and tools. So why did people invent money?

Back then, no family could make everything it needed by itself. So people swapped. A farmer gave some eggs to a fisher, and the fisher gave fish back. People call this kind of trading barter, which means swapping your things straight for someone else's things.

Barter works well when each person wants what the other one has. The farmer wants fish for dinner, and the fisher wants eggs for breakfast. Both of them walk home happy.

Now imagine the fisher says no thanks to the eggs, because she wants new shoes instead. The farmer has no shoes to give, so the farmer gets no fish. This is where barter gets stuck. What do you think people needed, so a swap like this could still work?

People needed one thing that everybody agreed to take in return for anything. That thing became money. Long ago, people picked things like shells and small bits of metal to be their money. Nobody knows for sure how the very first money began, but stuck swaps were one big reason.

Now the farmer could give eggs to a baker who wanted eggs, and the baker paid with shells. The farmer carried the shells to the fisher and got fish. The fisher took the shells gladly, because she could give them to the shoemaker for new shoes.

Money helped in one more way. Eggs crack and fish go bad, but shells and metal stay the same for years. So people could keep their money now and buy what they needed later.

Let's remember our key word: barter. People invented money because barter only works when both people want each other's things, and money is something everybody agrees to take for anything.

Now you know the clever idea hiding inside every coin, so sleep tight and dream of happy swaps.
