Why do people join stars into shapes?

On a clear, dark night, step outside and look up. Tiny lights twinkle all over the sky. Can you feel the cool night air on your cheeks?

Picture a grown-up beside you, pointing up. With one finger, they trace a big spoon made of stars. So why do people join stars into shapes?

The sky holds more stars than anyone can count. From down here, each star looks like a tiny white dot. One dot looks almost the same as the next one. That makes one star hard to find again.

So long ago, people picked a few bright stars that look close together in the sky. In their minds, they joined those stars with lines, like a dot-to-dot picture. The lines made a shape, like a spoon, a bear or a hunter.

People call each star shape a pattern, which means a shape you can spot again and again. The spoon pattern has four stars in its bowl. Three more stars make its long handle.

Your eyes spot a pattern much faster than one lonely dot. You remember a pattern far better, too. When the stars come back the next night, what do you think people find?

They find the same pattern again! The stars keep their places beside each other, night after night. So the spoon looks like the same spoon tonight, tomorrow and for years.

Once you know the pattern, you can find one star inside it. Look for the spoon, and the star at the tip of its handle is right there. The shape works like a map that helps people find their way around the sky.

Our word today is pattern. People join stars into patterns so they can find and remember the stars.

Sleep well, and on the next clear night, look up for a star shape of your own.
