How can you check every animal got a letter without counting?
Picture a cozy rug with animal friends sitting in a long row. There is a bear, a bunny, a duck, a fox, a frog, a mouse and a little owl. Beside you sits a pile of letters in envelopes. Can you hear them crinkle as you lift them?
Every friend should get one letter. But counting a long row is tricky, and you can lose your place. So how can you check that every animal got a letter, without counting at all?
You can use a trick called pairing, which means putting one thing together with one other thing. You give one letter to one animal, and only one. That way, each friend and their letter make a little pair, and no friend gets two.
Let's start with the bear at the end of the row. Pairing the bear with a letter is easy, and the bear holds it in big furry paws. Next come the bunny and the duck, one letter each. A friend with a letter is done, so you can move along.
The fox and the frog get their letters too. Now look at the row and at the pile. Some friends are still waiting, and some letters are still in the pile. We can't tell yet if there are enough, so we keep pairing.
The mouse takes a letter in tiny paws. Now only the little owl is waiting, and the pile is much smaller. What do you think we should look for, to know if everyone got one?
Look for anyone left out. The owl reaches for a letter, and it is the last one in the pile. Now no animal sits with nothing to hold, and no letter lies alone.
That is how pairing checks without counting. If an animal sat with nothing to hold, you would spot it left out right away. Here every friend holds a letter, so every animal got one.
Pairing. Pair one letter with each animal, and if nobody is left out, everyone got one.
Next time you hand out cups or crayons, try pairing, and you will know everyone got just one.
