High on a hill, tucked under a soft purple sky, there was a little dragon named Ziggy. His scales were the color of warm honey, and his tummy glowed a tiny, happy gold whenever he was excited. And right now, oh, he was very, very excited.
Ziggy hopped from one little paw to the other. He flapped his small wings — flap, flap, flap — and spun in a wobbly circle on his cozy bed of moss. "It is bedtime," his mama had said. But Ziggy did not feel even one tiny bit sleepy.
His eyes were wide and bright, like two little lanterns. There were so many things to wonder about. Was the moon awake? Did the stars get tired too? He tried lying down, but his tail kept wiggling all on its own, swish, swish, against the soft moss.
He squeezed his eyes shut and counted his breaths. One little puff of warm air… two little puffs… three. But the moment he opened them again, he was just as wide-awake as before. Bedtime felt very far away.
Outside his little cave, the night was quiet and sweet. A cool breeze drifted in, carrying the smell of cool grass and faraway flowers. Ziggy pressed his nose to the opening and peeked up at the sky, where a thousand tiny lights blinked softly down at him.
"How can anyone sleep," Ziggy thought, "when the whole sky is sparkling?" He let out a small, glowing yawn, just a little one — but no, he was not sleepy. Not even close. He padded back inside and flopped down with a soft thump.
Then — something tiny twinkled at the cave door. A speck of silver light, no bigger than a firefly, floated gently in the air. It drifted closer, glowing soft and warm. Ziggy sat up, his golden tummy glowing brighter with wonder.
The little light grew, and grew, and slowly took the shape of someone small and kind. It was a star fairy, with gauzy silver wings and a crown of tiny twinkles in her hair. Her name was Stella, and she had been watching the wide-awake little dragon from the sky above.
Stella smiled the gentlest smile. She floated down and sat beside Ziggy on the soft moss, leaving a sprinkle of stardust wherever she went. The little dragon stared, wide-eyed, hardly daring to breathe. A real star fairy, right here, in his very own cave.
She told him, in a voice as soft as a feather, that she knew a secret for sleepy little ones who could not settle down. One last slow flight across the night sky, she said — a dreamy, drifting journey to gather sleep from the stars. Ziggy's heart gave a happy little flutter.
"Yes," Ziggy's whole face seemed to say. "Oh yes, please." He scrambled up, wings buzzing, far too thrilled to stay still. But Stella only laughed a soft, twinkly laugh and held up one small hand. Slow, she reminded him. This was a slow and gentle kind of adventure.
So Ziggy took a deep, slow breath, just like she showed him. In… and out. His buzzing wings grew calm and quiet. Then Stella took his little paw in her tiny hand, and together they stepped softly out of the cave and into the cool, sparkling night.
