When the last light of day slips behind the hills… the sky turns the colour of a soft, sleepy plum. One by one, the little stars wink awake. And high, high above the rooftops, someone tiny begins to stir.
Her name is Tweela. She is the littlest fairy in the whole wide sky — no bigger than a buttercup, with wings that shimmer like dew. All day long she sleeps in a curl of cloud… but at night, oh, at night, she has the most important job of all.
Tweela carries dream-dust. Warm, soft, golden dream-dust, gathered from the very last sunbeam of the day. She keeps it safe in two little pockets, sewn from moonlight. And every single night, she sprinkles it over sleeping children, so only the sweetest dreams will come.
She stretched her tiny arms and gave a long, slow yawn of her own. Then she shook out her wings — once, twice — until they glittered. The cloud beneath her was warm and snug, and for a moment she did not want to leave it at all.
But far below, the town was settling down for the night. Windows glowed amber, then dimmed. Cups of warm milk were drunk to the very last drop. Somewhere, a soft lullaby drifted up through an open window… and Tweela smiled.
"Time to begin," she whispered to herself. "There are so many little ones waiting for a happy dream." She patted her pockets to be sure the dust was safe, and it was — warm against her tiny fingers, like sunshine that had decided to stay.
And so, ever so gently, Tweela stepped off the edge of her cloud. Down she floated, slow as a falling feather… past the sleepy stars… past the round, kind moon… down toward the little town tucked in for the night.
The night air was cool and quiet. A few leaves rustled hello as she drifted by. An owl blinked its big round eyes and let her pass without a sound. Everyone, it seemed, knew that this was Tweela's quiet hour.
Lower and lower she went, until the rooftops rose up to meet her like little hills. Chimneys puffed the last of their cozy smoke. Cats curled tight on warm doorsteps. And there, just ahead, a single window glowed with the softest, butter-yellow light.
That window — that little glowing window — was exactly where Tweela was headed tonight. She tucked in her wings, just a little, and pointed her tiny toes toward it. Closer… and closer… and closer she came.
She landed on the windowsill without a single sound — lighter than a snowflake, quieter than a held breath. Beyond the glass waited a cozy little room, and a small someone almost ready for sleep. Tweela peeked inside… and her heart went warm and full.
