A Little Light Wakes Up
Flick's Little Light Journey

The evening was warm and blue. In a garden full of sleepy leaves, a very small firefly woke up, and his name was Flick. He stretched one wing… then the other — slowly, the way you stretch after a lovely long nap. And there, right at the tip of his tail, a little golden light blinked on. Good evening, garden!

Flick looked down at everything he knew. The clover was folded up for the night. A snail slept under a rhubarb leaf, shiny as a button. The tomato plants smelled green and warm, and somewhere behind the fence a cricket was tuning his tiny fiddle. Everything was soft. Everything was quiet. Everything was… exactly the same as yesterday.

But behind the garden there was a gate. And behind the gate — a path! A pale little path that slipped away between the grasses and turned a corner, and nobody, not once, had ever told Flick where it went. His light glowed brighter, the way lights do when they get a big idea. Tonight, he thought. Tonight!

First, a check. Flick blinked his light on — off — on again. It worked beautifully. Then he flew a small loop, and a bigger loop, and one very wobbly loop that ended right inside a dandelion. Fluff everywhere! He shook the white seeds off his wings and hovered, terribly proud, above the sleeping clover.

Then he said goodbye, the polite way. Goodbye to the tomato leaves. Goodbye to the snail under the rhubarb, who did not wake up at all. Goodbye to the old watering can, who never says very much anyway. And Flick slipped through the gap beneath the gate — and there was the path, waiting, wide and quiet and new.

The path was softer than he expected. Moss along one side, warm dust along the other, and small pebbles that shone faintly whenever his glow passed over them. Above him the sky turned from blue to a deeper, kinder blue. Flick flew slowly, one wing-beat at a time, and the garden gate grew smaller and smaller behind him. He was travelling. Really and truly travelling.
