The day had been long and full of soft, happy things… and now it was almost over. The little one lay tucked beneath a warm blanket, blinking up at the ceiling. Outside, the sky had turned the colour of deep, sleepy blue, and the room had gone very, very still.
One by one, the bright sounds of the day had drifted away. No more clinking spoons. No more shuffling feet. Just the small, slow breath of the house settling down for the night… and the faint hush of the wind brushing past the window like a passing thought.
The little one looked toward the far wall, where the daytime had left its colours behind. The toy shelf was there. The little chair was there. But now they were only soft grey shapes, sitting quietly in the dim, waiting for morning the way everything does.
And then, in the corner by the chair, there was a shadow. Just a small one. A gentle pool of dark, gathered where the light could not quite reach. It did not move. It did not make a sound. But it was there, and the little one noticed it.
A tiny feeling fluttered up — light as a feather, but real. The kind of feeling that comes when a room feels just a little too big and a little too quiet. The little one pulled the blanket up, right to the chin, and held it there with two small hands.
It was not a scary shadow, really. It was just… new. The way the dark can look different when the day has gone to sleep before you have. The little one breathed in, slow and careful, and kept watching that quiet corner by the chair.
What the little one did not know — not yet — was that the dark in this room was never alone for very long. On nights just like this one, when a shadow gathered in a corner and a small heart fluttered, something warm always came. Something kind. Something soft as candlelight.
And so the little one waited, holding the blanket, watching the dim. The house breathed. The window hushed. And somewhere, very near, a tiny spark of gold was already beginning to wake.
It started so small you could almost miss it. A glimmer. A flicker. A single warm point of light, no bigger than a firefly, drifting up from behind the toy shelf. It wobbled once, the way a soap bubble wobbles, and then it steadied, glowing gently in the dark.
The little one's eyes went wide and soft. What was that gentle light? Where had it come from, here in the quiet, here in the dim? It floated, slow and easy, like a tiny moon that had wandered indoors to keep someone company.
And the strangest, nicest thing of all… the moment the little glow appeared, the fluttery feeling grew a little quieter. Just a little. The blanket loosened in those two small hands. And the room, which had felt so very big, began — very softly — to feel a little smaller, and a little warmer, and a little more like home.
